Granted the Longest Day doesn't have the gritty, tough realism of a Saving Private Ryan, but I remember enjoying it nonetheless. John Wayne is still John Wayne, but I thought it was one of his better films. You may or may not like it. I'll be interested to know once you watch it.

Thanks for the recommendation, Steven! I've put the Longest Day on the old Netflix list. It's a film that's been hovering around, demanding that I watch it for a long time. Time I got down to it.

Brent: I agree that Wayne is going for a different type of hero, but I've always felt like he was putting it on. Acting it. The thing I love about Clint is how natural the persona is, like he really could chew you into splinters. Wayne struck me a poseur, and The Searchers didn't change that feeling as much as I thought it would. We'll see. I'll give him a few more chances.

Wow, I need to brush up on my films. I haven't seen any of these all the way through. For a classic John Wayne WWII film, try The Longest Day. I really enjoyed that one when I was younger but haven't seen it in a while.

Hmmm. For me, John Wayne never was the badass Clint Eastwood managed to pull off so well. Wayne's a different kind of hero.

Wayne is to Clint as Paul Newman is to Robert Redford. There's a down-to-earth normality to Wayne's hero characters.
