Very good points about comics that work without continuity in its stable of characters, but I disagree that he was talking about not having a permanent cast, if only because Dresden Codak has one, and this quote references his intent in the Hob storyline as well as the overall strip.

While I agree that a comic can work without consistent characterization, I don't think a coherent storyline can. My critique is leveled primarily at the Hob storyline, which had some a fair amount of intended continuity.

I brought up the quote to suggest that the author aversion to people returning to the strip primarily for the cast was the reason Hob came off disjointed and disconnected. That a stronger attention to characterization would have made the Hob story both easier to follow and more satisfying, even if the intention for the strip as a whole was not to be a character driven one.

Thanks for your perspective on this. It's very appreciated.

I think you are misunderstanding the quote. He's just explaining why he doesn't want a permanent cast of characters. Strong character writing does not require a recurring cast. The web comic Partially Clips is a good example. Also, a recurring cast can get in the way. Think of Calvin and Hobbes, where in order to wrestle with some big ideas we get all these strips of them sledding off a cliff while they have a discussion. Those sledding strips barely count as comics because once you have seen a couple the visual aspect and what happens to the characters is totally predictable and could be left out.

My concern is it's not one fat, bearded guy. At that rally alone, people were shouting at reporters just for taking their attention off of Gov. Sarah Palin to look at other protesters, and that's just one in a long list of scary stories.

Merrian Webster defines terrorism as "the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion" and on a technical level, threatening and then committing violence upon someone to scare them becomes terrorism as soon as it becomes systematic.

Threatening and assaulting reporters who come to your rallies may not be systematic, but combined with threats at other rallies, and with the scary hate-and-threat filled e-mail and voice mail places like ACORN are getting, I'd say we're coming up to that off-ramp. What's missing is a lot more violence, and I hope it stays that way.

All that said, I'll concede a certain amount of hyperbole on my part (which I did my best to limit by saying "lesser form of terrorism"), but maintain my central point. There is a said, scary irony in a group of people insinuating a presidential candidate is a terrorist when they're simultaneously threatening reporters who disagree with them.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. It's appreciated. I'm considering a post about my, and other people's, use of the word "terrorism" because of it.

One fat, bearded guy yelling at a reporter to stop talking to Obama backers and then kicking him is a long, long way from "terrorism."
I'm a friend of the reporter who got sent sprawling. I'm disgusted by what happened. But an assault by an overworked Palin fan against a reporter doesn't deserve to be mentioned as any kind of terrorism.

So I googled "pony meme" (which you have to admit was a courageous thing to do, especially at work and especially just before I leave for lunch), and came up with this. Elsewhere, it is suggested that it actually originates with a Calvin & Hobbes strip...

As a member of several of the left's interest groups, I am moderately surprised to discover that Mr. Obama will be heeding my demands. No doubt we'll want to start slow. How do free universal healthcare & higher education, the immediate decriminalization of recreational drugs, the abolition of testing in public schools, the dismantling of the CIA, NSA, & DEA, lifetime incarceration for a few hundred prominent Republicans, and a federal pony distribution system sound for the first year or so? I'm sure this would require a tiny bit of cooperation from Congress and various state legislatures, but no doubt this resurgent American Left is strong enough to extract it...
